Book Review: Lights Out by Navessa Allen
WOW let me just say this was a Five Star read and nothing less! This book actually got me into reading again.
I didn’t know I even liked dark romance until I picked up Lights Out by Navessa Allen. This book changed everything for me.
I was on a camping trip when a friend handed me her copy, and I thought I’d read a few chapters before bed. That didn’t happen. Instead, I stayed up all night, turning page after page, completely hooked. By the time the sun came up, I was still reading, desperate to know what would happen next.
The story was gritty, intense, and impossible to put down. It pulled me into a world that felt raw and real, and before I knew it, I was obsessed. Of course the things that happen in this book are not considered "real" especially when she enjoys getting stalked. I hope no one actually likes that. Anyways! I digress.
What I loved most was how it pushed me outside of my usual comfort zone and showed me how powerful dark romance can be.
The best part? When I finished, I found out Navessa already had her second book, Caught Up, on shelves. I begged my husband to drive me to Walmart, and when I saw the last copy sitting there, I grabbed it like my life depended on it. And trust me, I devoured that one too.
If you’ve ever thought dark romance wasn’t your thing, I recommend giving Lights Out a chance. It might surprise you the way it surprised me. Navessa Allen has a way of writing that makes you feel every ounce of intensity, every risk!. And now? I’m officially a fan.
She has announced that her third book is coming, so be on the lookout! I am so excited!

What is it about?
This will contain spoilers so if you are not interested, well you have been warned.
Aly’s strong. She has to be with the things she sees every day at work as a nurse in the ER. But underneath that armor, she aches for something darker, something she can’t admit out loud.
Then there’s Josh Hammond. The masked man who’s been watching her from behind a screen. He’s the kind of trouble your mama warns you about, the kind that makes your pulse race anyway. He hacks into her life, slips past her walls, and even breaks in like he owns the place. It should terrify her. Instead, it’s the spark that lights everything on fire.
Aly spends her days patching up other people’s nightmares. Trauma nurse. Exhausted. Worn thin. When she finally clocks out, she slips into a different world, scrolling masked thirst traps on Tiktok like they might fix the pieces of her sanity.
Then one night, a little tipsy and way too bold, she leaves a comment on the masked mans video. A fantasy. Him breaking into her house.
And damn if it doesn’t come true.
Because Josh, the masked and inked mystery she can’t look away from, is suddenly standing in her bedroom. And that one reckless moment drags her into a dangerous, addictive game she can’t walk away from.
Lights Out is a fast-paced dark-rom-com following a burned-out trauma nurse and her masked online fantasy come to life. It skates the line between dark and playful, loaded with stalker vibes, suspense, danger, and subversive humor. The male lead is ethically complicated but compelling, and their interactions are equal parts shocking and strangely sweet.
If you're curious about dark romance but wary of purely grim tales, this might be a great introduction. Though the trigger warnings are real, and the ride can get intense.
